St.George Bank Beachside Dash 2015

The 2015 Dash helped to raise nearly $50,000 for life improving and life saving research at St George & Sutherland Hospitals.

On behalf of all our doctors, nurses, researchers, and patients – a huge thank you to all the runners, walkers, families, teams, volunteers, fundraisers and sponsors.

Our 8th annual St.George Bank Beachside Dash was our most successful – with more participants, more funds raised, and more fun on the day.

For the first time we hosted a Health & Wellbeing Festival, and attracted more than 1,500 people to Peter Depena Park on Sunday the 13th of September.

Winning the 10km Brighton Beach Dash was little more than a training run for distance runner Ali Najem. Most of Najem’s races are more gruelling, such as the Pat Farmer soft sand half marathon which he won in June, or the Australia Day Wanda Ex-Treme. Najem won the 10km Dash in 34min15 sec ahead of Christian Lotter (35min45sec) and Christopher Breen (36min41sec).

He was among the 1500 people who turned out to support the 10km, 5km and 2km St George Bank Beachside Dash which raises money for St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation. More than 600 competitors took part, and the event has raised almost $50,000 so far, with fundraising staying open until September 30. The youngest was two-year-old Aodhan O’Brien, who broke his leg in a trampolining accident and had to be pushed across the line by his five-year-old sister Chloe. The oldest, 79-year-old semi-retired neurologist Dr Don Pryor, is the veteran of 23 City to Surfs and most of the eight Brighton Beach Dashes run so far.

But for most of the competitors, running in the Dash is less about winning and more about raising money for life saving medical research. Sisters Anthea and Christie Charalambous said they ran as a way to say thank you for the ”awesome support” their father received from his cardiologist and St George Hospital when he suffered a heart attack in 2012. ”We have a family history of heart disease and his heart attack motivated us to get fit,” said Anthea.

The sisters competed in the 5km run, finishing in about 41 minutes and plan to return for next year’s run.

Cancer survivor Cheryl Pirreca, who is an ambassador for the Foundation, walked the 5km with husband Sonny, son Andrew and daughter Susan Reid. They finished the course in just under 57 minutes.

Champion fundraisers were another pair of sisters, Liani and Erika Stockdale, who have raised more than $1200 between them.

Winners in the 5km category were Amy Brown (18min38sec), Lauren Carey (18min39sec) and Tayla Scneider (19min42sec). Men’s winners were Jordan Anderson (16min22sec), Kyle McIntosh (16min30sec) and Patrick O’Keefe (18min13sec).

Overall Individual Fundraising Winners were:
1st Liani Stockdale, 2nd Erika Stockdale, 3rd Violet Becvarovski, 4th Mutya Aller, 5th Franziska Pettit, 6th Mohamed Hassan Elbalboushy, 7th Eric Lee, 8th Anthea Charalambous, 9th Mary Braddick, 10th Marea Getsios

The best Fundraising Team went to HighLow Fitness at Ramsgate!

2015 Dash Details:

A slight change to the 2015 course allowed runners of the St.George Bank 10km (for runners only) and Tynan Motor Group 5km to remain on formed, fast foot path for the entire race, making it ideal for setting a personal best time. The course followed the beautiful beachside path from Peter Depena Reserve in Dolls Point to Kyeemagh, and back. All courses were well-signed and drinks were available on-course and at the start / finish line.

There was plenty of on-street and off-street parking. Many families came down to cheer runners on, especially for our Novotel Sydney Brighton Beach (Kids) 2km Dash.
