St.George Hospital is one of the leading public hospitals in New South Wales. In addition, the St.George Private Hospital next door has become a leading provider of private healthcare in Australia.

The St.George Hospital and Community Health Service offer a comprehensive range of inpatient and community-based health services to more than 250,000 residents of southern Sydney. It is an accredited principal teaching Hospital of the University of NSW, offers a designated medical trauma service and is the Medical Retrieval Service Co-ordination Centre for New South Wales. The Hospital's many areas of expertise include critical care, surgery, cancer care, medicine, women's and children's health, mental health, community health and medical imaging. Major areas of research conducted at The St.George Hospital and Community Health Service aim to facilitate better health through preventive medicine and education, as well as the discovery of new medicines and treatments for disease and injury. Approximately 35 per cent of the St.George district's residents are from a non-English speaking background. In 1999/2000 there were more than 43,000 admissions (including day only) and more than 514,000 outpatient treatments were administered.

The hospital is also the nearest provider of specialist medical services for around 200,000 residents of the Sutherland Shire. Each year the hospital admits more than 50,000 patients (including day only) and provides outpatient treatments for over 770,000. St.George Hospital has approximately 600 beds, employs more than 2500 staff (full-time equivalents) and is one of the largest hospitals in Sydney.
