Graduated in Medicine from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg South Africa in 1988, and spent 20+ years, at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, a 2800 bed teaching hospital.

Associate Professor George Skowronski MBBS(Hons), FRACP, FRCP, FJFICM

Early years were spent as a research fellow in cardiology. He completed a Science Honours Degree in Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town at the same time as doing this post graduate research he completed a research Fellowship in Cardiology and his Basic Physician Training (1990-1994). Renal Advanced Training was from 1995-1997, with a year in the United Kingdom. His PhD was completed in Public Health and Nephrology in 2010. He was the head of the department of Renal Medicine from 1996-2009 before recently joining The St George Hospital as a Senior Staff Specialist in September 2009.

In November 2003 he was responsible for establishing the Dumisani Mzamane African Institute of Kidney Diseases (DMAIKD), a state of the art centre of nephrology in Soweto, Johannesburg. The centre has since served as a training centre for nephrology in the University of the Witwatersrand and for students and specialists from many African countries. In South Africa, he was actively involved with the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and in particular the Commission for the Global Advancement of Nephrology (COMGAN). He represented ISN-COMGAN at meetings in Africa for both education and training purposes. He has served on the Boards of the International Federation of Kidney Societies and the South African Kidney Foundation. He was on the Senior Executive Committee of the Dept of Medicine University of the Witwatersrand and the South African Renal Society.

His main areas of publication to date have included hypertension, peritoneal dialysis, HIV and kidney disease and the early detection and prevention of kidney and cardiovascular disease. He has served as a reviewer for a number of international renal journals, and as a supervisor and examiner for post graduate research in nephrology and public health. He has managed over $3million dollars worth of grants, and has 21 peer reviewed publications (14 DE accredited and 7 non-DE accredited). He has remained predominantly a clinician, academic and teacher.
