Associate Professor Thomas Nau

Associate Professor Thomas Nau, MD, Priv Doz (Vienna)

Director of Trauma, St George Hospital, Area Director of Trauma Services and Clinical Associate Professor Graduate School of Medicine UOW, Conjoint Senior Lecturer UNSW.

Thomas Nau graduated from the University of Graz, Medical School, Graz Austria in 1994. He completed his specialist training in Orthopaedic/Trauma Surgery at the Medical University of Vienna, Trauma Centre in 2003. During this time he completed a 12 months research fellowship at the Laboratory of Imaging and Orthopaedics of the University of Montreal, Canada in 2000.

Since this time he has built up a program of biomechanical research with computer modelling and human movement analysis as the main topics. He completed his professorial thesis combining a computer model with reconstructive surgery of knee ligament injuries. Furthermore he has a special interest and is very active in trauma system research and development. He was able to attract significant grant funding in Austria and has an extensive publication record in the field of trauma and orthopaedics.

He has won a national award for his work in the management of the major trauma patient. Since 2005, he is working as Orthopaedic Surgeon in Australia and is heading the Department of Trauma Service at St George since 2006.

Apart from improving the delivery of trauma service within an inclusive trauma system on a clinical level, it is the future vision of Dr Nau to extend his basic research activities and combine the biomedical engineering activities with the fields of cell biology and imaging.
