The significance of cancer research goes without saying. Whilst the death rate figures speak for themselves, a very major (and difficult to quantify) factor is the “misery” related to cancer – the disease itself, the treatment-related problems and the major impact on quality of life, work and the family and loved ones.
St George is fortunate to have the world renowned Cancer Care Centre for timely and expert delivery of cancer services. Within the hospital, there are several vigorous research program covering different a wide range of cancer research initiatives such as: diagnostics, population screening, research into basic disease mechanisms to help understand why it occurs, and what makes it spread, novel diagnostic methods, new drug development, novel tumour targets, novel ways of selectively targeting tumour cells with radio-isotopes, and innovative surgical and non-surgical ablative techniques.
The good news is that the 2 biggest killers in men, colorectal cancer and prostate, the death rate is beginning to fall. This is in part due to early detection and treatment, combined with better treatments.
