In conjunction with the SGH Surgical Liver Unit (headed by Prof David Morris), the
St George Hospital Dept of Radiology has conducted and published the world's largest therapeutic trial of a destructive heating technique (radio-frequency ablation) in the treatment of metastatic lung disease (cancer that has spread to the lung; predominantly from a treated colorectal primary cancer). They showed that this innovative treatment afforded patients a 40% 5 yr survival, which represents a doubling of survival rate when compared with existing standard therapy for this condition.
