Gut and liver diseases are very common in our community. For example, one in 30 Australians will develop bowel cancer, 20% of the population has constipation, 16% of the elderly have swallowing difficulties which are frequently life-threatening, and 17% of the population have the distressing symptoms of the irritable bowel syndrome for which we have no cure. Inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s or colitis) affect 1 in 300 young Australians. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) affects ¼ million Australians and is the leading cause of liver failure and transplantation in our community.
The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is fortunate to have a number of internationally recognised clinician researchers, who between them have published over 400 original papers, reviews and book chapters in the world medical literature dealing with research which address these diseases. Our leading researchers have attracted multidisciplinary teams of basic scientists, physiologists and clinicians which not only help them elucidate the mechanisms of diseases seen daily on our clinics, but puts St George Hospital in a strong position to translate the benefits of this research through the expertise of its staff into providing first class treatment for its patients.
