The inaugural iCare Community Charity Gala was held on Friday 1st November at Club Central Hurstville to raise funds and awareness for St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation.
Organised by the all-volunteer event committee, chaired by Ms Annie Tang, the event was a celebration of the diverse culture in the areas with the purpose of fostering love, care and harmony in the community.
The event’s volunteer committee reflects the diverse range of ethnic backgrounds that make up the St George and Sutherland areas. Committee members include Councillor Christina Wu of Georges River Council, Scott Yung, Dominic Sin, Cynthia Zhao, Veige Chen and PJ Shrestha.
“Our committee members come from a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds, but we have come together with the shared vision and passion to give back to our community”
“We have always been proud of the culturally diverse and inclusive nature of the St George and Sutherland area and we are truly blessed to enjoy a high quality of life knowing that our local hospitals have a strong medical research focus, attracting leading clinicians, resulting in better treatment for patients and the community” Ms Tang said.
This year’s event saw over 200 guests in attendance including Mr Mark Coure MP, Member for Oatley, Mayor Kevin Greene, Georges River Council and Councillor Vince Badalati, Georges River Council.
Jacquie Stratford CEO, St George and Sutherland Medical Research, said events like the iCare Community Charity Gala help the community understand the benefits of supporting local medical research and the impact this has on the community.
“The Foundation supports a wide range of medical research including cancer, cardiovascular disease, haematology, pregnancy, aged care, infectious diseases, critical care especially brain trauma, mother and child health and of course microbiome research. I am sure that one of these health issues has affected us all, either personally or through a loved one which is why it is so important to get the community’s support through events like the inaugural iCare Community Charity Gala”.
The St George & Sutherland Medical Research Foundation was established in 2007 with the sole purpose of raising funds to support medical research at St George and Sutherland Hospitals.
“Medical Research is vital for our local hospitals because hospitals with a strong research profile attract and retain the best staff and provide the most up to date and best treatment for ourselves, our families and loved ones”. Ms Stratford said.
All the funds raised at the iCare Community Charity Gala will go towards the 2020 SSMRF Medical Research Grants.
