St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation Relocates!

The St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation (SSMRF) has a vision to facilitate and fund medical research to improve the health and wellbeing of our community – now and in the future.

Formed in 2007 by a group of passionate doctors at St George Hospital, SSMRF was established as an independent body working in close collaboration with South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) and University of New South Wales (UNSW). The locally based community organisation is dedicated to raising funds to support medical research in the community hospitals of the St George and Sutherland areas, proudly working alongside the St George Hospital and The Sutherland Hospital.

Having grown from humble beginnings, SSMRF today has awarded medical research grants totalling over $7.8million to researchers based at St George and Sutherland hospitals.

In 2021, the Foundation now embarks on a new chapter within the grounds of St George Hospital. St George Hospital is providing office space to the Foundation, free of charge to support its work.

Paul Darcy, General Manager St George Hospital, welcomed the Foundation to the hospital grounds.

“We are very happy to be able to facilitate the Foundation moving onto the St George Hospital campus and hope this location will help raise the profile of the Foundation and the amazing work done by our talented medical researchers here at St George Hospital,” Paul said.

This new announcement and commitment of support is welcomed by Cathy Yuncken, Chair, Leanne Dib, CEO and Directors of the Foundation.

Cathy Yuncken thanked Paul Darcy for this outstanding show of support and partnership.

“This is an exciting move for the Foundation, allowing us to increase our profile and work more closely with the St George Hospital community to support medical research in our hospitals. From grants provided to medical practitioners and scientist in our hospitals, to the nationally-significant Microbiome Research Centre at Kogarah, our goal is to enable globally-recognised medical research in our hospitals, and secure their position as great centres of biomedical science and medical care”, Cathy said.

Leanne Dib, welcomed the move to the hospital grounds, thanking the hospital for this support.

“After a challenging year, we turn towards this new year committed to working even more closely with our hospitals to turn scientific discovery into the best possible treatment, care, and outcomes for patients and our broader community, “Leanne said.

With its office located within the St George Hospital, SSMRF will continue to promote medical research within the two hospital campuses and to the wider community, as well as fund the best medical research through its annual medical research grant round.

In December 2020, SSMRF announce the recipients of the 2020 research grant round.

Three researchers from the St George Hospital and the Sutherland Hospital were awarded a SSMRF research grant for research projects focussed on improving care for medical conditions and diseases that impact many in our community.
