At our recent SSMRF Annual Dinner, Dr. Joel Poder was awarded the 2024 SSMRF Medical Research Grant, generously funded by Southern Cancer Care. His groundbreaking research is exploring how artificial intelligence can dramatically speed up the planning process for radiation treatment, ensuring precision care for patients with multiple brain tumours.

His research aims to validate AI tools that can assist in planning radiation treatment safely in just hours, using a morning MRI to plan and deliver treatment that same afternoon. This innovation has the potential to drastically reduce the treatment timeline for patients with metastatic brain cancer, cutting down what would normally be a week-long wait to just one day.
This research could make same-day radiation treatment for brain metastases a reality.
As Rosealeen, a patient now in remission, shared in a video produced by Southern Cancer Care, this breakthrough could be invaluable for patients, offering them much faster access to treatment.

Thank you to Southern Cancer Care for proudly funding research in partnership with SSMRF. 100 per cent of the research donations given to SCC go directly to funding medical research across St George and Sutherland Hospitals, making an impact on countless lives.
