EOFY campaign: Unlocking hope for dementia and neurodegenerative disease research

The devastating impact of neurodegenerative diseases

Neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease,  motor neurone disease and Huntington’s disease are cruel conditions that rob hundreds of thousands of Australians of their precious memories, mobility and independence each year. The emotional and financial toll on families is immense.

As our population ages, the prevalence of these diseases continues to rise at an alarming rate. Without more research and medical breakthroughs, the human and economic costs will become overwhelming.

The urgent need for more research

While there is still no cure for neurodegenerative conditions, researchers funded by SSMRF grants are working tirelessly to better understand these complex diseases. More research is critically needed to uncover the underlying biological causes, develop early detection methods and explore potential treatments.

SSMRF grant recipients’ studies are making important strides, but much more funding is required to accelerate the pace of discovery. Their work aims to shed light on the mechanisms behind Parkinson’s, dementia and related disorders to identify new ways to prevent, slow progression and improve quality of life.

As Luigina Ferlaino shared when announcing a new research grant in honour of her late father Giuseppe, who battled neurodegenerative disease:

“It is impossible to convey in words the exceptional qualities of our dear Papa, although the fact that we are determined to have his name and values live on via these research grants is testimony to what a unique individual he was.”

Help the Ferlaino family and SSMRF honour Giuseppe Ferlaino and others with neurodegenerative diseases this EOFY.

Join the search for cures this EOFY

The key to unlocking future cures lies in funding more research today. As we approach the end of the financial year, you can play a vital role in accelerating medical breakthroughs by supporting SSMRF’s vital medical grants program with a tax-deductible donation. Your generous gift will help fund grants for pioneering projects. Together, we can create a future free from neurodegenerative diseases. But we need your help!
