Thank you for supporting life-saving research

$25,325 raised – and counting!

Thanks to the generosity of our community, the 2025 EOFY campaign raised an incredible $25,325 to support early-stage, life-saving medical research at St George and Sutherland Hospitals.

While just shy of our $30,000 target, this is an extraordinary result and we are deeply grateful to everyone who gave, shared and stood with us.

This campaign was built on one powerful truth: every medical breakthrough begins with a seed.

Why seed funding matters

At SSMRF, we fund early-stage, investigator-led research,  the kind that often struggles to secure major grants but holds the key to tomorrow’s treatments. These “seed grants” empower researchers to explore bold ideas, gather vital data and unlock new frontiers in patient care.

This year alone, we’ve funded:

  • Dr Joel Poder’s work in improving precision cancer treatment through same-day MRI-guided radiotherapy
  • Dr Xiaotao Jiang’s innovative study into how the gut microbiome influences dementia through blood biomarkers

These are the kinds of projects that start small, but go on to change lives.

Chloe’s story: From research to recovery

At the heart of our campaign was Chloe Palmer-Simpson, who survived a traumatic brain injury at just 18 years old. Thanks to a research trial funded through an SSMRF seed grant, Chloe received care that helped her heal and rebuild her life.

Her journey, from the ICU to walking the Kokoda Track, is a powerful reminder of what your support makes possible.

“Without medical research, I wouldn’t be here today.”
– Chloe Palmer-Simpson

What’s next? It’s not too late to give

Although the EOFY deadline has passed, your support is still vital. Donations made from 1 July onward are tax-deductible for the new financial year and will help us continue funding life-saving, community-focused research.

Every gift counts. Every dollar brings hope.

Thank you for being part of this movement – for showing up, giving generously and believing in the power of research to save lives.

We can’t wait to share the next breakthroughs with you.
