After 12 years as Chair of the Foundation, Professor John Edmonds AM announced his retirement from his position in December 2019.
“After 12 years as Chair and seeing this Foundation achieve many things, I feel now is the right time to step aside. The Foundation is in a strong position with opportunities ahead. I am pleased to appoint Cathy Yuncken as the new Chair of the Foundation. I will continue to hold a position on the Board through to June 2020, which will allow for a smooth transition for Cathy. I look forward to seeing the Foundation’s continued success”.
The Foundation has always had two major aims: first, to raise the research culture of our hospitals by fostering good research across the breadth of the biomedical endeavours of our staff; second, to help create a major centre of research which becomes of national and international significance and provides important benefits to our patients.
During John’s tenure as Chair, the Foundation has successfully worked towards these objectives, awarding over $7.8 million to more than 50 research projects, supporting promising and emerging researchers across diverse areas, and in 2019 the Foundation proudly saw the opening of the MRC – Microbiome Research Centre – which today, is a hub of stimulating research collaboration nationally and internationally, and is set to become a major player in Australian medical research.
On behalf of the Board, we sincerely thank John for his time as Chairman of SSMRF. He certainly leaves the Foundation in a much stronger place then when he joined as Chairman in 2007 and he has provided incredible counsel and guidance over the years to the management team.
